Over the years, I met so many people with instruments sitting in their homes. When I asked, “Do you play?” I often heard the same story: “I took lessons as a kid. I can play a few songs, but I don’t really play anymore.”

When I asked why, I kept hearing the same problem: they could play what someone taught them, but they didn’t feel confident creating their own music. They never fully understood the theory behind what they were playing.

I created Before You Learn to change that.

It shows you how every element of music connects to this one idea. Intervals, scales, melodies, harmonies, chords, and rhythms aren’t separate facts—they all exist for the same reason: to create and vary tension. Those variations are what give music its emotion.

Why I Built This Course.

I created Before You Learn after struggling with music theory myself. I watched musicians—from beginners to artists signed to record labels—and saw that great music depends on how musicians connect and use what they know.

Drawing on my background in education, I spent 14 years developing an approach that begins with the big picture, connects musical concepts, and invites students to create as they learn.

My goal is to help you get the most out of your instrument. Music theory shouldn’t dictate what or how you play—it’s a foundation to express yourself freely, learn songs effortlessly, and connect more deeply with the music you love.
